The Wildco 150-A90 Hester-Dendy Square EPA Substrate Sampler is an artificial substrate sampler designed for collecting aquatic macroinvertebrates for biological monitoring and environmental assessment. The sampler provides a standardized surface that can be colonized by aquatic organisms before being retrieved and examined in the laboratory. Hester-Dendy samplers are used in rivers, streams, lakes and other aquatic environments and can help reduce some of the variability associated with sampling naturally occurring bottom substrates.
The 150-A90 is the 14-plate square EPA configuration, consisting of fourteen square plates measuring approximately 7.6 cm × 7.6 cm (3 × 3 inches). The plates are separated by 24 round spacers, arranged to create progressively larger spaces between plates. The sampler has an approximate exposed surface area of 0.16 m², excluding the eyebolt.
The sampler can be suspended in the water column, attached to submerged objects or deployed using an appropriate anchor. For stream studies, Wildco notes that multiple samplers are generally used together and secured to a weight to keep them from contacting the natural substrate.
