Clove oil is a natural anaesthetic derived from the flower buds of the clove tree (Syzygium aromaticum). Its primary active ingredient, eugenol, temporarily depresses the central nervous system of fish, allowing them to be safely handled with minimal stress. Clove oil has become one of the most widely used fish anaesthetics in aquaculture, fisheries research, hatcheries, aquariums, and environmental monitoring because it is effective, inexpensive, and easy to use. When administered at the appropriate concentration, fish typically recover completely within several minutes after being transferred to clean, well-oxygenated water. It is light sensitive and the recovery period after the anesthesia may be longer in cold (<5 C) water. Sensitivity to clove oil may also vary between species, so it is advisable to test it before using it to a larger extent.
