The substrate can be placed in the egg tray at anytime, but is typically most effective if it is used after the eggs have been shocked and you are not picking unhealthy eggs any longer. You can adjust the layers of your substrate to a level you desire by using the zip ties to secure it. Typically zip ties are used at the open end one in the middle.
