The Great Lakes Timber Scribe  is a professional tree and timber marking tool designed for surveyors, foresters, timber cruisers, and other professionals who need to permanently mark trees, logs, and wooden surfaces. The scribe uses a double-edged cutting blade with a 5/8-inch radius that allows the user to carve straight lines as well as curved letters and numbers directly into wood. It can be used ambidextrously by both right- and left-handed users.

The Great Lakes Timber Scribe is manufactured with a mildly tempered steel blade designed to hold a sharp edge while remaining easy to resharpen. A 5/32-inch chainsaw file can be used to maintain the cutting edge. The scribe is supplied with a leather holster for convenient belt carry and safe storage when not in use.

A timber scribe can be particularly useful when establishing permanent tree identification or survey marks. For example, surveyors can carve abbreviations such as BT (Bearing Tree) into a cleared section of bark. For best results, a smooth writing surface can be prepared by removing a portion of the bark with a bark knife, axe, machete, or hatchet before scribing.
