Hess Stream Bottom Sampler, 500 Micron Mesh

Product Code: 16-C52
The Wildco® 16-C52 Hess Stream Bottom Sampler is a quantitative benthic macroinvertebrate sampler designed for collecting organisms from shallow, flowing streams with gravel and cobble substrates. Equipped with a 500 µm Nitex® collection net that meets many U.S. EPA benthic sampling protocols, the sampler encloses a known sampling area, allowing researchers to calculate organism density and abundance accurately. Constructed from 304 stainless steel, the Hess sampler is widely used in biomonitoring, water quality assessments, and aquatic ecology studies. and bucket.
Includes:
- Dolphin™ bucket adapter
- Dolphin™ bucket (200mL)
- Front screen and Hess net
- Drum and handles: 304 stainless steel, 330 mm diameter x 400 mm height
- Fasteners: 18/8 stainless.
- Bottom open area: 0.086 m2
- Replacement nets available
Key Features:
- Quantitative sampling of benthic macroinvertebrates using a known sampling area (0.086 m²).
- 500 µm Nitex® net captures most aquatic insect larvae while allowing fine sediment to pass through, making it suitable for many regulatory monitoring programs.
- 304 stainless steel construction provides excellent corrosion resistance and durability in freshwater environments.
- Open cylindrical design is pushed and rotated into the streambed to isolate the sampling area.
- Reversible handles provide leverage for embedding the sampler into gravel and cobble substrates.
- Includes a Dolphin™ adapter and collection bucket for efficient recovery and transfer of samples.
Advantages:
Compared with Surber samplers, the Hess Stream Bottom Sampler offers:
- Better performance on gravel and cobble streambeds.
- Cylindrical enclosure that minimizes loss of organisms during substrate disturbance.
- Greater stability in flowing water.
- Quantitative sampling with a fixed sampling area for repeatable scientific studies.
- Rugged stainless steel construction suitable for years of field use.
