The Wildco 150-A50 Hester-Dendy Round EPA Substrate Sampler is a compact artificial substrate sampler used to establish and collect colonies of aquatic macroinvertebrates for environmental monitoring and biological assessment. The sampler is placed in a river, stream, lake or other aquatic environment for a predetermined period, allowing organisms to colonize the multiple plates before the sampler is retrieved for laboratory analysis. Hester-Dendy samplers are particularly useful when standardized artificial substrates are preferred over larger basket or cage-style samplers.
The 150-A50 consists of 14 round tempered hardboard plates, each approximately 7.5 cm (3 in.) in diameter, separated by variable numbers of spacers to provide different-sized openings between the plates. The assembled sampler is approximately 14 cm long and 7.5 cm in diameter, with an exposed surface area of approximately 1,300 cm² according to Wildco's specifications. It weighs approximately 0.45 kg.
The Hester-Dendy can be suspended at different depths, floated at the water surface, or attached to submerged objects such as stakes or boulders. After deployment, organisms colonizing the artificial substrate can be removed and analysed to assess aquatic community composition and environmental conditions.
